In 1971, Dole is appointed chairman of the Republican National Committee and campaigned extensively for Republicans in 1972. In the wake of the Watergate scandal, Dole fights to keep his Senate seat in the closest race of his life. Dole marries Elizabeth Hanford in 1975, creating one of Washington’s most famous power couples. Dole joins the GOP ticket in 1976 as President Gerald Ford’s choice for Vice-President.
