Announces Second Presidential Primary Bid
November 09,1987

Dole traveled once again to his hometown of Russell, Kansas, to declare himself a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in 1988. He hired Tom Synhorst, who had successfully seen Senator Chuck Grassley re-elected to the Senate two years earlier, to manage the operations in preparation for the Iowa caucuses. Through innovative grassroots campaign tactics, such as attending town meetings, Dole was successful in upsetting his major opponent, Vice-President George H. W. Bush, in the Iowa caucuses.
