Citizens of Russell, KS Collect Funds to Pay Dole’s Hospital Cost
April 01,1947

Although Dr. K would not charge for his services, Dole would have to pay for the surgeries' hospital expenses. The sympathetic citizens of Russell, led by the VFW Chapter 6240, rallied for Bob and took up a collection. The "Bob Dole Fund" started with a cigar box on the counter of Dawson's Drugstore. Swelled by the small bills and change of his childhood friends and neighbors, the fund eventually surpassed $1,800.
