PERSONAL EVENT

Second Lieutenant Bob Dole was only 21 when he was assigned to I Company of the 85th Regime. As part of the 10th Mountain Division, Dole’s company was originally meant to be skiing soldiers, proficient enough to take on German alpine soldiers in snow and mountain terrain. Dole, a Kansas native, had minimal experience with the 10th Mountain Division criteria. He joined the division with many other soldiers who had little or no experience in the mountains after the Army discovered there were not enough “skiing soldiers” to fill an entire division.
